Choose a shirt for how you plan to wear it: buttoned, open over a T-shirt or as an extra layer. That determines the room you need through the chest, shoulders and sleeves.
Short-sleeved shirts leave your forearms uncovered. Compare the sleeve opening and body length if you plan to wear the shirt untucked.
Long-sleeved shirts offer more ways to adjust the sleeve. Check sleeve length and cuff measurements for each design.
Flannel shirts focus on a soft fabric surface. Checks are a visual choice; fibre content, fabric weight and any lining need a separate look.
A buttoned shirt should allow the movement you need without pulling open between the buttons. Reach forward and sit down to assess it. Slim fit has less room than a straighter cut, but a fit label does not replace garment measurements. For larger sizes, compare men's plus size shirts.
Measure a shirt that fits you well, buttoned and laid flat without stretching it. Follow the product's measuring method. If your shirt is 58 cm wide and the new one is 61 cm, that is 3 cm more flat width, approximately 6 cm around the body. This is a measurement example. Compare the length against where your current hem sits over your trousers.
Read both the fibre content and fabric description. Cotton can be used in flannel, denim and other fabrics with different textures; blends add further differences. A black shirt gives a quieter look, while checks, camouflage and graphics take up more visual space. Chest pockets and epaulettes suggest an army style without proving a protective function.
Allow extra room if you will wear the shirt over a T-shirt. A thicker layer also needs room at the shoulders and sleeves. If you mainly want an outer layer, compare overshirts and shirt jackets. Always follow the care instructions for the individual garment.
