Choose a long-sleeved shirt by sleeve length and chest width together. More width will not necessarily fix a short sleeve, and a longer sleeve does not mean the rest of the shirt fits.
The soft fabric texture works buttoned or over a T-shirt. Compare men's flannel shirts and check fabric weight and any lining.
Denim gives a jeans-style finish; corduroy adds a ribbed texture. Compare the drape and any stretch, as texture does not determine fit.
Pockets and epaulettes create a functional look. Check the design details, fibre content and measurements in the product information.
Compare a shirt you own with the product's measurements using the same method. Sleeves may be measured from the shoulder seam or another point; these measurements cannot be compared directly. Bend your arm and reach forward. The cuff should provide the coverage and movement you need.
Check that the cuff works around your wrist without pinching. A wider cuff can slide further over your hand even when the sleeve length is right. When rolling a sleeve, leave space at the elbow so the fabric does not tighten as you bend your arm.
Measure the chest width of a buttoned shirt and compare with one that works over your planned layer. Allow room through the sleeves and upper back too. For larger garment measurements, see plus size shirts. For a more substantial outer layer, compare overshirts.
A buttoned shirt in a quieter colour gives a more composed look, while an open shirt shows the layer beneath. Jeans and boots suit a rugged style; simpler trousers let the pattern stand out. If you prefer uncovered forearms, see short-sleeved shirts, or compare the full men's shirt range.
