Sweatpants are casual trousers often made from soft fabrics with an elasticated waist. Joggers commonly have a sportier shape or a narrower ankle opening, but the name alone does not tell you how roomy the trousers are or whether the fabric suits intense exercise.
Choose cuffs to gather the fabric at the ankle, or an open hem to let it fall over your shoes. Baggy describes extra room in the fit and can be combined with a narrow or wide hem.
| Style | Leg shape | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Cuffed joggers | Fabric gathers at the ankle; room through the hips and thighs varies. | Cuff width and space through the thighs, including when sitting. |
| Straight legs without cuffs | A more even line down to an open hem. | Length with your shoes on and how much fabric rests on the shoe. |
| Wide legs | More volume through the legs and a wider hem. | Leg width and length so the hem does not end up under the sole. |
| Baggy or balloon shape | Extra volume, sometimes with a dropped crotch or tapered lower leg. | Crotch shape and hip/thigh room, as well as waist size. |

Check the fabric type and inside finish when choosing between lighter sweatpants and a warmer style. Cotton and cotton blends feature alongside fabrics such as velvet and teddy; the same fibre blend can feel different depending on its construction.
French terry has loops on the inside, while a brushed finish feels fuzzier. Look for an explicit description of the lining or inside surface. Fibre percentages alone do not establish thickness or warmth. Elastane can provide stretch, but an elasticated waistband does not mean the entire fabric stretches.
The waistband should stay in place without having to pull the drawstring very tight. A high waist describes where it sits on your body; elastic and drawstrings describe how it is held or adjusted. Check these separately and allow room through the hips and thighs when sitting.
Compare the product measurements with sweatpants you own in your preferred fit. Follow the guide's method: body measurements, garment measurements and the width of a flat garment are different measurements.
For an inside leg measurement, measure from the crotch seam to the hem along the inside. For a side length, measure from the waistband to the hem on the outside as instructed. If your trousers have a 76 cm inside leg and the new style has 72 cm, fold yours up by 4 cm to estimate the length. A dropped crotch or ankle cuffs can change where the hem actually sits.
Choose your top and shoes with the trousers' volume in mind. A shorter or tucked-in top shows the waist; a roomy hoodie creates a relaxed silhouette. Explore our women's hoodies for the casual combination.
Try straight and wide legs with the trainers or boots you plan to wear, so the hems fall freely without dragging. Cuffs show more of the shoe: check that fabric does not bunch against a tall boot shaft.
