Start by deciding whether you want sleeves, a warming lining or a denim vest. Construction affects room for clothing underneath and how you use the garment as temperatures change.
Choose a lined denim or denim-look jacket when you want warmth built into the outer garment. Check the lining and any padding separately: polyester in a fabric list does not establish how warm the jacket is.
A removable inner garment lets you change the combination without changing the outer jacket. Read what can actually be removed and compare the fit with and without that layer. Thick fabric alone does not guarantee winter warmth or rain protection.
A detachable hood changes the collar and the look around your head; a removable inner hoodie also changes the layers around your body. Check the product description to choose the feature you need.
If you want to wear your own hoodie underneath, compare our men’s hoodies and check space across the shoulders and chest. Two hoods can feel bulky at the neck. Try the combination you plan to wear.
Measure a jacket that fits well over similar clothing and compare it with the product’s measurement chart. Follow the stated measuring method. Flat chest width from armpit to armpit should be compared with flat width, not your body’s circumference.
For example, 59.5 cm in the chart compared with 57.5 cm on your jacket gives 2 cm extra across, roughly 4 cm around. Check length and sleeve length too. Reach forwards and sit down when trying it on to see whether the back pulls tight or the hem rides up.
Do not let the word stretch decide your size. Fabric with elastane still needs room for your layers. If garment measurements are unavailable, use that design’s size guide rather than transferring the size from another jacket.
Let a bold back design take centre stage and keep the top underneath simpler. A plain jacket can instead frame a more expressive top. With jeans, contrast the washes of the jacket and trousers so each fabric stands out. For genuine leather or synthetic surfaces with a different feel, compare our men’s leather and faux-leather jackets.
A denim vest creates a different look from a sleeved denim jacket. To compare more sleeveless designs, see our men’s gilets and vests. Before sewing patches on, check the inside, lining, pockets and seams so you do not close an opening or obstruct a removable layer.
Follow the garment’s care instructions and check whether removable parts have separate instructions. Cotton, stretch denim, prints and linings can need different care. Do not assume one treatment suits every denim jacket.
Remove parts before washing only if the care instructions say to. Check the instructions before using heat or washing a jacket with a back design. This keeps care specific to the garment you have chosen.
