The name of the hammer is known as Mjölner and is said to be worn by the mighty thunder god Tor. The hammer is said to have been forged by the dwarves Sindre and Brokk who made the hammer at a betting with the cunning Loki. Loki had done away with the gods after he cut off Tor's wife's hair.
The betting with the dwarf brothers Sindre and Brokk means that they produce three gifts for the gods Tor, Oden and Frej. Loki in turn produces three own gifts for the gods. If the gods choose the brothers' gifts instead of Lokes then Sindre and Brokk will get Loki's head.
The gifts Sindre and Brokk bring out are the ring Draupner to Oden, the magic ship Skidbladner to Frej and the hammer Mjölner to Tor. The gods choose the gifts of the dwarf brothers and Loki loses the betting.
However, Loki is very cunning and says that they get their head as promised, but they must not hurt the neck when the neck is not part of the head itself. The dwarf brothers have therefore lost their profits, which they are avenged by sewing back the mouth of Loke. The mouth is stuck to the head as they have won.
