Leggings are flexible trousers that usually fit closely through the hips and thighs. The legs can remain narrow to the ankle or flare towards the hem. This category focuses on everyday style, from plain black designs to camouflage, other patterns, ribbed surfaces and mesh or lace details.
Leggings and tights can mean different things depending on the context. In English, tights can also mean hosiery that covers the feet, while sports tights often describes close-fitting exercise clothing. For leggings, choose by the individual style's stated purpose and features.
A sporty look or mesh panels do not automatically mean compression, moisture management or fabric that remains opaque during exercise. Look for documented features rather than relying on the name.
Decide where you want a close fit and how the hem should look. Pattern and fabric surface are separate choices from the leg shape.
| Option | What changes | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Slim, full-length leggings | Follow the leg down towards the ankle. | Hip measurements, inside leg length and whether the fabric pulls at the crotch. |
| Bootcut or flared leggings | Fit closer at the top and widen lower down. | Where the flare starts and the hem length with your shoes on. |
| Capri or shorter legs | Leave more of the lower leg visible. | The stated length; the same style can finish at different points on different people. |
| Patterns, ribbing, mesh or lace | Add texture or contrast without determining the fit. | Panel placement. Mesh and lace can be intentionally sheer. |

High-waisted leggings place the waistband higher on your body; also check the rise and waistband construction. A broad elastic band or V-shaped waist describes the design, rather than guaranteeing it will stay in place on every body.
Cotton and cotton blends offer alternatives to synthetic blends. Velvet, ribbed fabric and leather-like materials create different surfaces. Read the specific style's material information: cotton identifies a fibre, ribbing describes a structure and a leather look describes appearance.
Elastane can contribute stretch, but its percentage alone does not tell you how far a garment will stretch. Check the fit description and size guide. Do not automatically choose a smaller size to achieve a fitted silhouette.
Start with the style's size guide and compare the same type of measurement. Body circumference should be compared with body measurements; the width of a flat garment is different. When trying them on, check that the waist feels comfortable when sitting and the fabric does not pull hard at the crotch or behind the knees.
If the guide gives an inside leg measurement, measure your own leggings from the crotch seam to the hem along the inside. If yours measure 74 cm and the new pair 68 cm, fold yours up by 6 cm to estimate the hem position. Rise, crotch shape and how the fabric stretches affect the result.
If you want to avoid sheerness, check the main fabric in good light, including with bent knees. Size, fabric and stretching affect its appearance; colour alone does not guarantee opacity.
Choose the length according to how much lower leg you want visible below a dress or top. A long top or dress gives more coverage over the hips; a shorter top highlights the waist. Plain women's tops and T-shirts let patterned leggings stand out.
Slim hems can meet low trainers or sit inside boots if the shaft allows enough room. Flared hems need enough length for the shoe without ending up under its sole. Try the right shoes before judging the length.
For a roomier silhouette, compare women's joggers and sweatpants; more options are in our women's trousers category. Follow the care label, especially for lace, mesh or a coated surface.
