What is a Lich King in Dungeon And Dragons?

The Lich King of Dungeons & Dragons is an immortal creature found in this fantasy RPG. The Lich King is a sorcerer or magician who seeks to defy death through magical means.

Gary Gygax, one of the creators of Dungeons & Dragons, claimed that he based the description of a lich in the game on the short story "The Sword of the Sorcerer" (1969) by Gardner Fox.

The Lich King was one of the earliest creatures introduced to the Dungeons & Dragons game.

In the original Dungeons & Dragons rule set, the Lich King was introduced in the Greyhawk (1975) supplement. It was simply described as a skeleton monster that was formerly a mage or a mage/priest in life and retains those abilities.

In Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st edition (1977–1988), a more detailed description of the Lich King was given in the Monster Manual (1977). It was mentioned that the lich has reached "a non-human, non-living existence through the power of will. It maintains this state through certain spells, enchantments, and a prayer." The nature and function of prayer was not fully explained. Other varieties of lich were also introduced, such as demilich and dracolich.

In later editions of Dungeons & Dragons, including 3rd edition and 5th edition, the Lich King continued to be a central creature. In D&D 5th edition, the Lich King is described as a sorcerer who stores his soul in a phylactery, a unique container, and feeds it with captured souls to sustain himself.

The Lich King often has a special ability to retain their memories, personality, and abilities from their past life, making them extremely powerful. They are also immortal and are immune to diseases, poisons and other effects that only affect living creatures. To permanently destroy a Lich King, its phylactery must be destroyed, and they will be very protective of this item.

Some Dungeons & Dragons editions have also introduced good variants of the Lich King to show that they may have noble purposes behind their undead state.

In addition to the classic Lich King, there are also variants such as demilich, dracolich, illithilich (alhoon), baelnorn, and several others in various campaign settings and editions of Dungeons & Dragons.
