Suspenders are a garment whose original function has been to hold up, for example, trousers and skirts. Nowadays, braces are used mainly for a more decorative purpose.

Variants of braces have actually been used by humans since 400-500 BC. But the modern belt we see today was invented in 1820 by Albert Thurston.
