Mjölner, or Thor's hammer, is probably the symbol we know best of all Old Norse symbols. As the nickname Thor's hammer reveals, it is the hammer that belonged to the Asa god Thor.

The hammer was forged by the two dwarves Sindre and Brokk and given as a gift to Thor after a bet with Loki. Namely, Loki has made enemies of the great Asa gods after cutting off Thor's wife Siv's hair.

He then makes a bet with Sindre and Brokk that they will make three gifts to the gods. Loki must also make three gifts and if the great asa gods choose Sindre and Brokk's gifts, the dwarves will receive Loki's head.

The dwarfs won the bet and wanted to claim Loki's head. But the cunning Loki said that the head was theirs but they could not remove it from his body as the neck could not be harmed. This did not belong to the head.

However, the dwarves got their revenge by sewing Loki's mouth shut.
