What is a Beholder?

A beholder, sometimes called a "sphere of many eyes" or "eye tyrant", was a large monster most commonly encountered in the Underdark. These large, orb-shaped creatures had ten eyestalks and a central eye, each containing powerful magic. Powerful and intelligent, beholders were among the greatest threats to the world.

Their body skin seemed to be made of a stone-like substance, strong and durable like steel. Their bones were porous and lightweight, similar to leathery cartilage. The eyestalks were flexible tentacles or articulated supports covered with hard skin. Beholders had a central eye that emits an anti-magical field and the monster could then use its eye stalks to project various magical effects. Their ability to fly was due to a gas generated inside their bodies. They could eat almost anything organic and preferred visually impressive meals.

Beholders were xenophobic and violent creatures, quick to attack enemies and those deemed different. Their minds were divided into two entities that acted independently but did not trust each other. They had a complex personality and were greedy for power and wealth. In battle, they could use their eyestalks to project various magical abilities, including the ability to instill fear, enchant, destroy, or kill their enemies.

In summary, beholders were globular creatures with many eyestalks and a central eye that possessed a variety of magical abilities and a complex personality that made them one of the greatest dangers in the magical world we find ourselves in when playing Dungeons and Dragons.
