CAP CARE GUIDE

Wash a cap without ruining its shape or colour

The safest method is to hand-wash the cap in cool to lukewarm water with a little mild detergent, treat stains gently and air-dry it over a round bowl. Always check the care label first.

Most styles in our range of caps for everyday wear respond best to gentle hand-washing. This lowers the risk of fading, a warped brim and a misshapen front panel.

How do you wash a cap by hand?

  1. Read the care label and check the material, print, embroidery and brim construction.
  2. Fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water and add a small amount of mild liquid detergent.
  3. Test a hidden area first, especially on dark or strongly coloured caps.
  4. Use a soft cloth or brush on the sweatband and stains. Work gently and avoid hard scrubbing.
  5. Rinse with cool water without twisting or folding the brim.
  6. Press out water with a clean towel and air-dry the cap in its proper shape.

Quick answer

Cool water, mild detergent and air-drying are the basic rules. If the brim construction is unknown, spot-clean an older cap instead of soaking it.

Which cleaning method suits the material?

The cap's care label always takes priority over general advice. Its material and construction determine how much water and handling it can tolerate.

TypeSafest methodAvoid
Cotton/polyesterGentle hand-washingHot water and twisting
Mesh/truckerSpot treatment and a short hand-washCrushing the mesh front
WoolWool-safe detergent and cool waterSoaking and heat
Leather/suedeSuitable leather care or professional helpOrdinary water washing

With a mesh trucker cap, preserving the front shape is especially important. A Flexfit cap may also contain stretch materials that should be protected from high heat.

Can you wash a cap in a washing machine?

Only when the care label explicitly allows it. Machine movement can bend the brim, distort the front and wear down embroidery. If the label permits machine washing, use a laundry bag, a gentle cycle, low temperature and low spin. Always air-dry.

Can you wash a cap in a dishwasher?

We do not recommend a dishwasher. High heat, strong dishwasher detergent and an environment designed for tableware may affect colour, glue, the brim and fit. Hand-washing offers better control and is normally the safer choice.

Take care with older caps

Older or simpler brims may contain materials that do not tolerate soaking. If the construction is unknown, clean small areas with a lightly damp cloth and let the cap dry between treatments.

How do you remove sweat stains and odour?

Mix cool water with a small amount of mild liquid detergent. Test inside the cap, dab the sweatband and leave it for a few minutes. Then work gently with a soft brush or cloth. Repeat the treatment rather than using bleach or scrubbing hard.

  • Salt marks: start with water and mild detergent.
  • Grease: use a tiny amount of washing-up liquid locally, rinse well and follow the care label.
  • Odour: let the cap air until completely dry and never store it damp.

How do you dry a cap without losing its shape?

Place the cap on a clean towel and loosely fill the crown with a small towel, or put it over a round bowl. Align the brim while it is damp. Let it dry at room temperature, away from tumble dryers, radiators and strong sunlight.

Three caps that show why material matters

Cotton army cap as an example for gentle hand-washing
The cotton army cap has an adjustable fit. Hand-washing helps preserve its shape.
Black trucker cap with cotton front and mesh for careful cleaning
The black trucker cap combines a cotton front with nylon mesh, so both areas need gentle handling.
Black and white trucker cap as an example for spot cleaning
Spot treatment is a smart choice on a black and white trucker cap to limit colour transfer.

Common mistakes when cleaning a cap

  • Starting without reading the care label.
  • Using hot water or bleach.
  • Twisting the brim or crushing the front.
  • Drying on a radiator, in a tumble dryer or in strong sunlight.
  • Soaking an older cap with unknown construction.
