How to fold a T-shirt: 4 easy methods

Dunken guide

Fold your T-shirt quickly, evenly and without needless creases

Four simple methods for shelves, drawers and suitcases, plus the mistakes that make stacks collapse.

How do you fold a T-shirt?

Lay the T-shirt face down, fold one side and sleeve towards the centre, repeat on the other side, then fold the garment once or twice from the hem. Smooth the fabric after each fold. This method works for most men's T-shirts and creates an even rectangle that stays stable on a shelf.

Quick answer: Face down, sides towards the centre, sleeves in and hem up. For drawer storage, add one more fold so the T-shirt can stand upright.

How to make a classic fold step by step

  1. Undo any buttons and lay the T-shirt flat, face down.
  2. Smooth the back, sleeves and hem with your hands.
  3. Fold about one third in from the left and place the sleeve back over the fold.
  4. Repeat from the right so the garment forms a long rectangle.
  5. Fold the hem towards the collar. For a smaller rectangle, fold to the middle first and then once more.

A plain style makes the edges easy to see while you learn. Browse more T-shirts without prints.

How do you fold a T-shirt quickly?

The quick-fold method uses three points along an imaginary line from shoulder to hem. Pinch the shoulder with one hand and the middle of the shirt with the other. Move the shoulder hand over the other hand to the hem, grip the fabric, uncross your arms and shake out the shirt. Place it down and fold over the loose side.

The move can take only a few seconds once it becomes familiar, but start slowly. Gripping at different distances from the side creates a crooked fold.

How do you fold T-shirts for a drawer?

First make a narrow rectangle by folding in the sides. Then fold the garment into thirds or quarters from the hem until the package can stand securely. Place the T-shirts upright next to one another so you can see every garment without lifting the whole stack.

An extra-long style usually needs one more fold than a standard cut. Compare fits among long T-shirts.

How do you pack a T-shirt in a suitcase?

Fold in the sleeves and sides to make the garment narrow, then roll firmly from the hem towards the collar. Roll evenly without pulling the fabric. This method fills small gaps and makes garments easy to identify, but it does not automatically reduce weight or total volume.

A flat fold is often better for shirts or T-shirts that crease sharply. Put heavier garments at the bottom and do not press a hard roll against prints or decorations.

How do you fold a printed T-shirt?

Turn the garment inside out or place it print-side down on a clean surface. Avoid making a sharp fold directly through a thick or rubberised design. Put the fold line just above or below the print instead and store the garment without heavy pressure from above.

Always follow the care label and compare more styles among printed T-shirts.

Which common mistakes create crooked stacks?

  • Folding on a soft surface: beds and sofas make straight edges harder to achieve.
  • Skipping the smoothing step: small wrinkles become deeper beneath a stack.
  • Making every garment the same size: extra-long and oversized styles need another fold or a wider stack.
  • Building the stack too high: several lower stacks keep their shape better.

Important: Only fold completely dry, clean garments. Moisture, deodorant or dirt trapped in a closed drawer can cause odours and stains.

Do different fits need different folds?

The basic method is the same, but the final size should suit the garment and storage space. Oversized styles finish wider, long styles need more folds in height and heavier fabric takes up more room. Do not force every T-shirt into exactly the same package if that causes creases or unstable stacks.

Choose the fit, length and print that suit your style, then fold each garment for the space you have.
